Norway killer and some thoughts...

" Norwegian gunman Anders Behring Breivik insisted Tuesday he would massacre 77 people all over again, calling his July rampage the most "spectacular" attack by a nationalist militant since World War II."

So clearly this guy is unrepentant. Prison is supposed to be a punishment and a reformation. What if he doesn't "repent"?

"Norway doesn't have the death penalty. If found mentally sane — the key issue to be decided in the trial — Breivik could face a maximum 21-year prison sentence or an alternate custody arrangement that would keep him locked up as long as he is considered a menace to society"

Theoretically, this guy could be kept in jail for the rest of his life as long as he is considered a menace to society but I don't know Norwegian law. But what's interesting is what the 21 year prison sentence says about human life and crime in Norway. Norway has said that the life of one individual is worth 21 years of the attacker.

People way the cost of items all the time in different terms than money usually time. If I lose a dime I'll look for it for 30 seconds and that's it. If I lose my wallet, I'll look all week for it. If my cat is sick and it'll cost $1000 dollars to operate but the cat is 17 years old and I say no, I've made the equivalency argument of saying that the month or year the cat has left is not worth $1000. We make these kind of judgments every day and the penalty for taking a life is what that country has determined the value of that life is. In this case, 21 years.

How many people would commit a murder, knowing 100% they would be getting out in 21 years?
