Review of YOU'RE NEXT



I recently watched the horror/crime drama You're Next and I was rather disappointed.  The basic plotline was during a reunion  a family is terrorized by a group of home invaders. The trailers look scary and creepy and intense and there is a good part of that in the movie however the movie relies on too much shock value of the people being shot at, stabbed or hacked.
The reason for the review is its crime prevention application. What did the people do right, do wrong, was it realistic?
The motivation for the invasion was to kill almost everyone except for two brothers and one girlfriend for the families millions as the two brother were in on it and they needed the girlfriend to be a witness. Unfortunately for them she grew up in a survivalist compound and kicks their butts but not before they kill most of the family.
One of the biggest criticism of the movie is the idea the killers would go to such lengths to terrorize rather than just storm in and kill. Although the movie presented the idea they enjoyed terrorizing, a true kill squad would be in and out quickly.
The heroine in the movie did a decent job of displaying good home fortification skills especially with the nails in the board under the window.
One of the elements of self defense was displayed and that was the "Oh crap" factor. After the first guy was shot and killed by the crossbow most of the people fell into quivering masses of "whatthehellisgoingon" or " whatthehelldowedonow" which is a common response to sudden conflict.
One thing they failed to do when they realized they were under attack is to do a thorough house clearing, going from room to room making sure it was empty of bad guys.
Another thing that needed to happen is unity and sense of direction in protecting themselves. It was chaos and the bad guys were able to take advantage of that.

Death Penalty - A slippery slope

  The Polly Klaas story rocked the nation for highlighting the idea that no one is safe, even in your own home during a slumber party.   I've included the entire article here. In 2024, a judge turned down the request for his death penalty to be recalled. But imagine if it was a possibility ? So now, he can have the lack of parole reviewed. And then possibility of early release. Review of Mercy - Message is that AI can't be trusted

 I wanted to review this movie because it intersects crime, crime prevention, evidence, justice and how justice is blind or should be...or shouldn't  be.   One of the most  chilling opening lines is " Mercy does not make mistakes".  It allows for the average citizen to develop a hands off, everything's fine attitude toward criminal justice.  The story takes place over a course of  a 90 minute trial where the protagonist Chris Raven, a police detective is accused of murdering his estranged wife. The evidence presented is both current events over the last 12 hours before the murder and also historical evidence of video clips, text messages sent by his now deceased wife Nicole.  The story unfolds with plots twists and turns and we come to find out that Chris is simply not a noble, likable character with a history of violent outbursts, drinking and relapse.  In the end we find out, no surprise that Chris is innocent of the charge, the comput...
